Jpeg2000 and IPhoto 09

I imported a JPEG2000 photo into IPhoto 09. Unfortunately, after an edit, it saves the image as JPEG, not JPEG2000, at 50% more space.  As I accumulate more and more photos, I would prefer to store in jpeg2000 to save space (mostly for keeping the cost of offsite backup down).  Most photos I take at a low res high-quality jpeg on my SLR, I’d prefer to take them at a high res and decrease the size by using jpeg2000 and reduced quality.  This will result in better quality overall.

I’d just as soon save every edited photo as JPEG2000, even if the original were jpeg, since I would be gaining quality.
