Installing Open Source on OSX
I had little luck with Fink - the packages were always out of date or non-existent or problematic in some other way. And Fink Commander always gave a warning that it was out of date, even though it was the most recent.
So I deleted all things Fink and installed Ports. The packages seem to work and install fine but ports has to compile the source. I am trying to install Gimp - I am sure it will take an hour or so to compile it! Someday there will be a great package manager on OS X for binary packages.

I spoke too soon. the ports package for GIMP doesn’t build.
– update April 25, 2008 –
Tried again, and it suddenly works. Go figure. Maybe each attempt at “port install gimp” made some progress.
