Time Saved From Dropping Reddit Redirected

In August I unsubscribed from Reddit and have not been back to the site since. It only took a few days to break that habit.
Since then however, I have subscribed to facebook. I limit my time on that service and have not let it turned into crackbook and I spend much less time there than I did reading useless info on reddit. I don’t bother with the more silly stuff (like biting chumps). It is cool for keeping in touch. I don’t like the walled garden aspect. I much prefer flickr and youtube for uploading photos and videos because they are much more widely shared than they are with facebook. I find people seem to prefer to send me a facebook message rather than an email message, which I find odd.
It would be cool if the cliquey aspects of facebook which allow you to maintain affiliations with your friends played nice with the broader exchange of knowledge (or other valuable stuff, like your photo of your house or a video of your kid on a trike) supported by the web with sharing/collaboration services like flickr, wikis, youtube and blogs.

Interesting that people would send notes more often than sending email. I have a theory for this: such behaviour simply reflects Facebook design as a *social* platform. The updates, pokes, photos and such that you see of your friends prompts you to dash off a quick note. Email, on the other hand, requires that you decide to send a note to someone, and then only offers you a blank page as inspiration.
