I transcoded my WMV files to Quicktime (H.264 video encoding) format with MPEG Streamclip, and then thought better of it, thinking perhaps I should store them in Mpeg 4 format. I found MPEG Streamclip can open a Quicktime file and save as an mpeg4 file without transcoding using the file/save as feature.
As an experiment, I thought I would try this with the WMV file to see if it can be saved into a quicktime or MP4 file without transcoding. It turns out they cannot be saved as MP4 but they can be saved as Quicktime. Curious, I looked at the details in MPEG Streamclip. It turns out that the Quicktime file simply contained Windows Media audio and video tracks, so this is not a very workable solution for me, as my goal is to have a standards based encoding that I think will be available for 20 or 30 years.
