neweretechnology ministack V2 review.
I ran out of disk space on my mac mini (recording a lot of video will chew up disk space quickly), so I bought a newertechnology miniStack V2 external firewire drive
(misrepresented as “Whisper Quiet”), which sites nicely under the mac.
The drive is disappointingly loud - (bordering on obnoxious when the fan comes on which seems to be most of the time), and it looks nice until you turn it on - the blue light that comes on when the drive is on is just too bright. I am not sure when their designers know that the Apple ones didn’t, because I really the like the Mac Mini’s tiny little light, which lets you know the device is on with a tiny little dot of light.
The miniStack looks great and is very quiet when it is off, but you wouldn’t want this thing in a bedroom, music room, or office - it would be fine in a server room. If I had bought this device locally I would just return it, but the hassle of boxing it up and shipping back to miniStack is not worth it, and it’s not so terrible that I plan to toss it onto the Junk Heap. I wish I had bought another ugly but silent 300G Maxtor external
drive from costco.
Has anyone tried replacing the fans in one of these ministacks?
