Lotus Notes Interface Second to None
David Leigh on Lotus Notes 8:
Hannover has a radically improved user interface that is second to none (hear that, Outlook users?).
Notes 8 sounds great, and I am cautiously optimistic it will be.

Having just tested out beta2 of Notes 8, I have to comment on this.
I, too, was hopeful that I would find Notes 8 compelling enough to move away from the Outlook / Domino Access combination I now use at work. I loaded the beta as soon as it went public, and played around with it for a week or so before finally removing it several days ago. With the exception of a few welcome features (live spell check, CTRL and SHIFT-click select of items), Notes 8 is primarily a pretty veneer over the same Notes engine. An improvement, to be sure, but not enough to entice me away from Outlook and DAMO, even with the quirks that combination brings.
I’m certainly no M$ fanboy, but I have to take exception to Mr. Leigh’s assertion that the Notes 8 UI is “second to none”. How did he come to that conclusion? When it comes to email, I much prefer the Gmail UI to either Outlook or Notes 8, but I definitely prefer Outlook to Notes 8. In fact, I willingly suffered hours of computer reconfiguration to remove Notes 8 and reconstitute Outlook 2003 with DAMO 7.0.2!
