MPEG-1 VS MPEG-4
I ran a brief test using MPEGStreamclip to convert the clips from my Sony camera from MPEG-1 to MPEG-4. With the options I picked (quality slider default, multi-pass, mono audio at around 100kbps) I found the reencoded files were 1/3 of the size of the originals.
