Foldershare vs. Rsync vs FTP
I have been trying to figure out how to share folders of data between myself and some relatives - photos, and videos in particular, as well as other data we might want backups up. It is a nuiscance to try and send them through skype, and publishing a bunch of videos via the web is just annoying to the recipient, who has to download and save each one.
While Rsync and SSH would provide a nice solution, the thought of getting SSH set up correctly on my mac, on my uncle’s Mac, and my dad’s two PCs (we all live far away, so I don’t have access to the computers), and then trying to get Rsync scheduled to perform nightly synchronization seems daunting.
Foldershare looks like a workable solution. It seems to be a lot easier to set up than SSH and Rsync, it is more declarative - I can just specify the folders I want shared or replicated and it happens.
It looks fairly easy to set up. The user interface is in a browser, not as convenient as a rich appt, but ajax seems to be what coders like these days. A total browser version for my office, where I run on a citrix environment and cannot install foldershare, would be cool.
Here is a partial list of what FolderSync claims to synchronize:
Sync Files • Sync your playlists • Share Outlook® folders • Sync your Internet bookmarks • Find the presentation on your home computer • Never email large files again • Share home movies with friends • Sync your databases • Keep financial data in sync on multiple computers • Collaborate on documents with people thousands of miles away •
I wonder if I can synchronize an IPhoto or ITunes database?
