NewsFire Review
I tried the trial (unregistered and free) version of NewsFire today.
- Strike 1: It wouldn’t open an OPML file saved with an extension other than OPML.
- Strike 2: It imported no feeds when I attempted to import the OPML file. There is an extra step required where you have to select all the feeds with command-A then hit import.
- Strike 3: The trial version limits me to 15 feeds. That is a showstopper for me.
I was looking for an alternative to NewsGator online, because my employer has no interest in changing their proxy rules to stop blocking sites with a ‘gator’ substring in their domain name, and NewsGator has no interest in changing their domain name or providing an alternative.

You might try NetNewsWire. There is a free “lite” version. It’s technically a NewsGator product now, but it works standalone. Should your company ever decide to change their policy, you could turn NewsGator syncing on, allowing you to use either the application or the webreader. Hope this helps.
