First Few Weeks With Blackberry

I have been using a blackberry for a couple weeks now. It has been working ok (except as noted in the previous post), synchronizing my calendar from Lotus Notes, and emails from both notes and my personal email provider (gmail). Google Talk works fine on it as well. I have it set up to beep when I recieve a new Google Talk message. There is no Google Talk VOIP, nor Skype, nor as far as I can tell, a SIP client for the device. I don’t even know if that is technically possible over GSM. Even a SIP client would be great, I could call 1-8xx numbers for free with free world dialup which would at least get me to my office. Or I could see setting up a SIP gateway at home to call out over PSTN. That would be cool.

Blackberry seems to do well with pdf or word attachments.

The wireless plan I have with Rogers allows me unlimited bandwidth. I can surf the web just about anywhere, for what that is worth. The killer feature of me is the calendar sink.

What I would hypothetically miss from my PocketPc if it weren’t for the things I don’t miss:

  • offline reading with plucker and ms reader
  • Audio recording, useful as a collection tool for a GTD system.
  • I think the tasks interface was a little better on the PocketPc.
  • Skype, especially making calls for free from open wireless networks.

    What I don’t miss:

  • ActiveSync. This is typical of what a consumer has to put up with. I found it so hard to use, that I really don’t miss the things I said I did above, because I couldn’t make most of it work.
  • A fairly convoluted workflow to convert documents on a PC or Mac before using them with plucker or MS Reader. This is true for the palm as well I believe.
