Configuring Airport Express When You Have a Non-Apple Router

If you are trying to get your airport express working with your wireless router (rather than a built in wireless card), the Airport Admin Utility won’t work unless you jack the Airport Express into your router with an ethernet cable. Then you can configure it to join an existing network, at which time you will be able to access the device with ITunes or the Airport Admin Utility. Once you know this trick, it should only take a few minutes to configure your PC or Mac to use your airport express. Its a wise idea not to change the name of your Airport Express Router.

Its funny there is no guidance from the Airport Admin Utility that says “Hey, no Airport Express Found, try connecting it via ethernet for initial configuration”.

Fespite the root word “ether” in “ethernet”, an ethernet card is not a wireless card; if that is what you have, your Airport Express is not going to automatically connect to your existing wireless network.
